Wheatcroft’s Wharf
About This Spot
Wheatcroft’s Wharf welcomes you with the gentle hum of life by the Cromford Canal, where old-world charm blends effortlessly with a warm, inviting atmosphere. As you step inside this thoughtfully transformed wharf building, there’s a quiet comfort that settles around you — a welcome pause from the bustle outside. The pace here feels unhurried, perfect for lingering over a hot drink or sharing a light lunch while watching day slip lazily along the water's edge.
This cozy café bears the marks of its canalside heritage in its snug corners and relaxed seating, inviting both locals and wanderers to settle in. Whether you find yourself upstairs in a cushioned armchair with a view of the canal or outside warming under the sun on a quiet bench, the space encourages connection — to nature, to good company, and to those simple, restorative moments that make mornings and afternoons at Wheatcroft’s Wharf feel quietly special.
The menu mirrors this spirit, offering more than just a meal or a snack. Here, the promise of freshly brewed coffee or a comforting pot of tea draws you in, accompanied by carefully crafted bites like a thoughtfully prepared sausage cob or a delicate slice of cherry almond cake. These aren’t rushed orders; they are unhurried invitations to savor, whether the richness of a chocolate tart or the subtle warmth of homemade butternut squash soup. Every item feels like a small, honest pleasure made to complement the setting.
In its friendly, lived-in atmosphere, there's room for the cheerful chaos of an early breakfast crowd, the peaceful solitude after a long canal walk, and the occasional gentle shuffle as people share small tables, coats, and stories. It’s this human rhythm — the ebb and flow, the shared moments amid the soft murmur of conversation and clinking cups — that makes Wheatcroft’s Wharf feel quietly rooted in its community and its landscape.

We've not been to Cromford for many years and it was nice to see this place open when we took our walk. We were originally planning to get some fish and chips in Cromford or Matlock but thought we'd have a breakfast for a change, although it doesn't look massive it as more than I could eat - some very nice sausages, much better quality than many, the usual accompaniments of hash browns, fried egg etc. all washed down with a nice Latte (plus a dog sausage for our dog). Definitely made a highlight to our walk and we've already said we'll come back and do the same again. A great place to visit, super service and a lovely breakfast.

Great location on the wharf of Cromford canal. An old wharf building converted into an equipped cafe/ coffee house serving breakfasts through to lunch. Been a few times and always had good food and beverages. Coffee is a great blend. Prices are reasonable and the place is warm in the depth of winter. Plenty of outside seating for the summer and dog friendly. Great selection of cakes, light bites and daily specials.

We didn't have food this time, because for a bitter cold Monday it was very busy and the staff were a little rushed, but the food that drifted past looked fab. The coffee was good and it is a lovely spot at the Cromford end of the canal. You just have be brave enough to ask people to move their rucksacks, coats etc. so you can sit and share a table, not the cafés fault, obviously.

We nipped into the cafe after a long walk down the canal and we are very pleased we did. The food was really nice, the best salad, coleslaw and panini I'd had in a long while. To top it all off we managed to sit in the 2 comfy armchairs upstairs with a view down the canal

Nice cafe on the waters edge of the cromford canal. They have a huge selection of drinks and snacks, plus a full menu and items like ice creams. Sitting on the outside benches next to the water on a hot day is so refreshing and relaxing. It can be busy at peak times so there can be a wait, but its certainly doesnt matter as spending time is this location is a pleasure.
